About the UK Gambling Commission

The organization was established after adopting the Gambling Act of 2005, regulating the activities of casinos, betting shops, and other gambling clubs. It is an independent non-governmental body sponsored by the UK Ministry of Culture, Media, and Sports.

This Act came into force on 1 September 2005. It considerably reformed laws regarding gambling in the country. In particular, it raised protection for children from gambling to a new level and streamlined online gambling.

What Does Gambling Commission Do?

The Gambling Commission has about two hundred employees. The head office of this organization is located in Birmingham, but about fifty of its members work in different parts of Great Britain. The Commission exists on contributions paid by licensees.

The organization regulates gambling in the country, including;

  • land-based casinos,
  • online casinos with servers in the UK,
  • bookmakers,
  • bingo halls,
  • games of chance,
  • lotteries, and some other areas.

Gambling Commission does not govern certain types of bookmakers and national lotteries, which are under the jurisdiction of the National Lottery Commission. However, it was decided to merge the two bodies. It should be completed by the end of 2012.
